Westboro Baptist Church often preaches on the streets outside America’s high schools. Indeed, during recent weeks, we have been at high schools from the Great Northwest down to Florida’s peninsula. As such, we have firsthand experience with the youth of this nation and we testify it’s not a pretty picture.
While courts and politicians are constantly talking about more money being poured into America’s high schools like a never-ending mighty river, students in those schools lag behind foreign peers and continue to decline each year. A report recently published by Harvard University’s Program on Education Policy and Governance found that students in Latvia, Chile and Brazil are making gains in academics three times faster than American students, while those in Portugal, Hong Kong, Germany, Poland, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Colombia and Lithuania are improving at twice the rate. The study’s findings echo years of rankings that show foreign students consistently outpacing their American peers academically. Students in Shanghai who recently took international exams for the first time outscored every other school system in the world. In the same test, American students ranked 25th in math, 17th in science and 14th in reading. Similarly, a 2009 study found that U.S. students ranked 25th among 34 counties in math and science behind nations like China, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Finland. As a public service WBC offers this high school primer: Learn this well and you will go a long way towards curing yourselves. (BTW, just so you know, a “primer” is a book of elementary or basic principles.)
So let’s get started –
You are utterly and totally depraved. There is nothing good in, of or about you. The original corruption under which you were born renders you completely indisposed, disabled, and opposed to all good, and you are wholly inclined to do evil. From your insides proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride and foolishness. (Mark 7:21-22). There is no truth in you; instead you are very wicked! (Psalms 5:9).
In other words, the whole “I’m OK, you’re OK” mantra is a lie! The Bible paints an accurate picture of what you are all about; you don’t fool us. Your hearts are deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. (Jeremiah 17:9). You are overflowing with evil and madness (or insanity) is in your heart. (Ecclesiastes 9:3). From the bottom of your feet to the top of your head there is no soundness in you but only wounds, bruises and putrefying sores that cannot be healed. (Isaiah 1:6).
You wild, undisciplined and violent students (who hate God) think it’s all about you but in truth, you are less than nothing in the eyes of your Maker. “Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.” (Isaiah 40:15). If the NATIONS are as the small dust on God’s measuring scales, imagine your irrelevance as one of billions of human beings on this planet.
Your only hope is a deep down, genuine, legitimate recognition of your vileness, acknowledging your need for the cleansing power of a potent savior and – most of all – a fear of God! There is no fear of God before your eyes; to the contrary, you mock God. In return, God mocks and laughs at you and will do so when your calamities come; and they WILL come.
We at WBC have genuine sadness for the young people of this nation. Your parents have abandoned you on all things important. You are taught from early on that murder (think abortion) is good and homosexuality is acceptable. You have no pole star or guiding compass. It’s no wonder then that surveys consistently show that you favor so-called “same-sex marriage” by large margins. You have no concepts of God’s law on marriage and the scriptural significance of marriage vis-à-vis Christ and his church.
These words of life that I tell you today are your only hope. I close with this: “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.” (Ecclesiastes 12:1).
