One Man, One Woman, One Lifetime

Hello

I had a question about marriage that I would like to know WBC view about. I am 29 years of age and was married a short time until my wife changed her mind about us and Devorsed me a few mouths ago. I loved her and didn’t won’t to get divorced but she refused to remain married to me. She had other plans for her life that did not include me. My question is if she would not consider remarriage to me would It be sinful to marry another woman.

Thank you

Matt

Hi Matt-

If she is your first wife, it is adultery to marry another. You are the savior of that body (Eph 5:23) of the twain made one flesh. That one flesh is not separated except by death (Rom 7:1-4; 1 Cor 7:39). She needs to know that God has commanded that you are one body for life. She too is committing adultery if she marries or beds another. If she refuses to heed those scriptural commandments and fails to return, you still are not released from that covenant you made with her to remarry.

Mt 5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Mt 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

Mr 10:11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.

Mr 10:12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

Lu 16:18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.

The fornication spoken of in the previous verses refers to the discovery that she was not a virgin (as you were led to believe) on the wedding night and then and only then were you permitted to put her away. There is no exception to this commandment after that. It is the pattern of the covenant God the Father has given us of Christ and His Bride, the church. It is not to be taken lightly.

Ephesians 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.  29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.  31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.  32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
