Ye Adulterers and Adulteresses: God Hates Putting Away

Subject: Divorce

I know I’ve already emailed you a question, but I am so full of them!

When I was 10, my mother committed adultery against my father. Even still, he did NOT want a divorce, but my mother moved out and was most insistent upon getting one. I understand how much God hates divorce (And I hate it too). My question is: Does God blame my father for this? He loved my mother and wanted her to stay. I realize you can’t speak for God, but maybe you have some insight? My heart still hurts for my dad and I just need to get this off my chest.

PS-Please don’t say cruel things about my mother, I understand how badly she screwed up already.

Hi, Katie –

Yes, God does blame your father for your mother’s adultery and their subsequent divorce.  Your father is the saviour of that body and is responsible for what your mother did.

Eph 5:21 ¶  Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. 22  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23  For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24  Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25  Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.

I do not know what happened between your parents, but God does, as He is witness between them.  Their marriage ended in divorce, because he dealt treacherously against her.

Mal. 2:14 – Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.

She is still his wife and he had no business divorcing her or blaming her by filling the air with a lot of self-justifying words.  He violently ripped that marriage covenant to shreds and tries to cover that violence with his words.

Mal 2:16 – For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.

Your father is to blame, Katie.  He needs to repent as the time is very short!  The Judge is even at the door!

Thanks for writing!
