In Short, All Westboro’s Public Ministry Is “Love Thy Neighbor”

Hello WBC!

My name is Alexis and I am looking for a few answers to some questions I have so I can complete a research paper for my college class on religion about Westboro Baptist Church and their religious views. I wish I could have come down to meet you all, but sadly I can’t. I would like to ask a few questions concerning some of the things I know many people want to know that I would love to add to my paper. It would be greatly appreciated if I could have them answered.

1.) Many people have seen Westboro Baptist Church members holding signs that say things like, “God Hates Fags” and “God Bless 9/11″, but in Romans 13:10 it is said, “Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefor love is the fulfillment of the law.” There is also Leviticus 19:18, where Jesus says, “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.”

Jesus never condoned hate in any way and said that harm (both mental and physical) should never be brought upon another. Many people would say that Westboro Baptist Church brings mental anguish upon many people. How is what you are doing different?

2.) According to Jesus, “when (people) rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the angels” (Mark 12:25). Sexual relations and differentiation had only penultimate significance. The unmediated access to God that resurrection bodies bring would make sex look dull by comparison, so this does mean that sexual orientation doesn’t matter in the afterlife?

If sexual orientation is not relevant when we pass on to Heaven, how is it relevant on Earth, where, technically, it is only a few years compared to eternity in Heaven?

3.) What are some kind words you would like to say concerning your daily lives? What other things do you enjoy outside of church activities?

Thank you so much for your time! God Bless and have a beautiful day! To thine own self be true.

Peace and Love,
Alexis

Hello, Alexis.

1.) First, watch this video about Leviticus 19:17-18 about “love thy neighbor” — http://twitvid.com/OZ8ME. In short, all WBC’s public ministry is “love thy neighbor:” obeying God and encouraging others to do the same, including by warning them of the consequences if they do not. The result of that may be “mental anguish” (as it was when Stephen was preaching and his hearers were “cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth” Acts 7:54) but that doesn’t relieve us of our duty. Our love is met with hatred of God and His standards; the only hatred is on their side.

As to why we thank God for 9/11, watch this video: http://twitvid.com/VUJJL. Thank God He didn’t destroy us ALL for our sins (as we deserve), thank God for the warning so we have opportunity to repent, and thank God for fulfilling His promise to judge evil.

2.) The only reason ANYTHING is important on earth is because God says it is. We recently posted a document “What is the Meaning of Life”: http://t.co/O73rKJz8. I suggest you read it in its entirety. Feel free to quote it at length in your paper.  :)  Here’s the short version: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13) God gave the command: one man, one woman, one lifetime (Matthew 19:4-6); our duty is to obey it. To disobey it is to demonstrate hatred of God. If it weren’t important, Jesus wouldn’t have talked about it. If it weren’t important, Sodom wouldn’t have been destroyed for it.

3.) The blessings and benefits of the Lord daily flow upon the Westboro Baptist Church, the pillar and ground of the truth. By the grace of God, with fervent love, we serve God and minister to one another: we talk often, we study His Word, we sing the praises of our God, and we do all we can to help one another. These are the important things we do. We also all go to school or work, we read books, we exercise, we play instruments, etc. But the focus of our hearts and minds are on those first things.

Thanks for writing.
