Time for a reality check.
In an angst-filled column, Romaine Patterson describes her efforts to silence the words of Westboro Baptist Church at the funeral of Matthew Shepard.
She closes: “Backs turned in silence worked great for us in Laramie.”
And by “worked great” she means, the attention of the whole nation landed on Westboro’s message – God Hates Fags.
For twenty years we’ve been on your mean streets. The first ten we entreated you to stop making proud sin your policies. You just got worse. Then God dealt you a blow on 911, which hardened your hearts. Today you flip God off daily.
Our job is to tell you that your policies-of-sin are taking you to hell. Anyone not saying that hates his neighbor in his heart. Wings, threats, lawsuits and statutes only get more attention on the words.
A hundred ways you try to shut us up; a thousand ways God makes your megaphone at our mouth larger and louder.
He alone opens doors of utterance; no man can shut them. Stop wasting energy trying to silence us. Heed the warning, come out from among this doomed nation’s manner of life, and obey! It’s your only and last hope!
