400 dead, 30,000 contaminated. Dead are mostly under 5-years-old. Lead poisoning is a consequence of villagers practicing small-scale gold extraction from lead-containing ore. Efforts to fix this mess are hampered by the reluctance of villagers to report potential lead exposure, for fear the government will prohibit their gold mining!
