Hi WBC,

What got Pastor Fred Phelps interested in something like Calvinism?

Hi Cari –

Pastor Phelps was interested in the Word of God. He found that John Calvin seemed to also be interested in the Word of God.  John Calvin happened to take the Doctrines of Grace, contained in the Bible and made a nice and convenient acronym to help a little soul remember those doctrines.  TULIP.

T = Total Depravity

U = Unconditional Election

L = Limited design in the atonement

I = Irresistible grace.

P = Perseverance of the saints.

Those precious doctrines do NOT belong to John Calvin.  John Calvin believed those precious doctrines.  We find them to be true and they answer to the Word of God and the words that are written in the book!  We believe God, by Christ Jesus our Lord, or we would not believe those doctrines.  So we are most thankful.  We must also insist that it is NOT of our doing that we believe.  See these words of truth:

Romans 8: 29 ¶  For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30  Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

It is ALL God, ALL the time.  The creature has NO part in any piece of it, except to be the thankful and happy recipients — the third party beneficiaries of the Covenant of Grace including the daily benefits, blessings and graces that flow over us, from our blessed and heavenly Father.

1Pe 1:9  Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Thanks for asking.

Your friends at WBC.
