What Do You Think Of Makeup?

Dear WBC,

When I asked you about the dress code for going to church at WBC, you said I should be clean. Does that mean just being hygienic or maybe also not wearing make-up? I regularly wear just (not too obvious) mascara when I go somewhere. With ‘not too obvious’ I mean not too much or the fake lashes kind of stuff they tell you about in advertisements.

Also, something just came up to me, because you told me about head coverings (I know it has to do with a verse in Corinthians). Although I do not know the WBC thinks that way, but just to make sure, women are not regarded as less beings or less worth (capable, intelligent or any other gift) than men, right? I hope I do not insult you, but just to make sure, but I have heard of people and, not only religious, who think that way. Again, I do not intend to insult anyone.

Yours sincerely,

Lisa

Hi Lisa –

Clean = take a bath, use soap, wash your hair, wash your hands regularly…some people call it good hygiene.

On the makeup…I don’t generally use it.  You seem to be asking me my personal opinion – so my personal opinion is based on the words that I find written in the Bible, which I love and try with all that is in me to follow, and which I beseech the Lord daily to let me do, and to do only those things that are pleasing to Him. So I find these words to be instructive, and perhaps you can fit your doings into this structure.

1 Peter 3:1-7  Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Adding this, I have been blessed with some years of experience, decades truly, for which I am most thankful.  What I have found is that the Lord my God has blessed me with much good work.  I have NO doubt that ALL who seek Him in truth, will find that He is faithful, and HE will give you light and wisdom about how to conduct yourself in the matters of what to put on your face.

Here are some more verses:

1 Tim. 2:9-10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;  But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

Plus, look at this woman that EVERY servant of God should strive to be like:

Proverbs 31:10-31  Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

FOCUS ON VERSE 30 for some wisdom on how important your makeup is.

Thank you for asking.

As for your second question…you cannot offend me.  I am nothing, and less than nothing.

ALL of creation is nothing and less than nothing.  If you fully understood THAT, you would walk humbly before this world, and more importantly, before your God, and you would not give a HOOT about how much glory you can get and how you are viewed by some trait of your character, when ALL of your character and EVERY THING THAT YOU ARE AND HAVE, you received from the Lord your God!

Truly, my dear friend, your question is the product of pride.  Proverbs 13:10  Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Adam was first formed, then Eve.  Go with that, and if you traffic with the servants of God, you will have so many blessings and good things to do, and such wonderful companions, that you will not give a thought to what you are entitled to claim as your standing or station, etc.  God has instructed his people about how they are to treat each other.  You are on an equal footing with every other soul in this earth, AND, you have the bounds of your habitation set by God.  So while NO WOMAN will stand in the pulpit of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, you are treated like every other soul, with great kindness, AND you will have plenty to do in service to our King! In short, Christ is ALL in ALL to His people.

My feeble effort to express this goodness is sad and sorry, but I hope you get the concept.

Thanks for writing.
