Thanksgiving Thoughts: What Are You Thankful For? Who Are You Thankful To? How Do You Manifest It?

What you are doing now is quite thankless, and not at all thankful. Fear God, and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

So Americans everywhere, and other nations around the world, are preparing to hunker down and celebrate what they call ‘Thanksgiving Day’. We did a video news a while back that summarizes the origins of this ‘holiday’  – some nice mocker put it up on YouTube for all to see – you can watch it by going to this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmVS82j5QTY

However, there are a few questions that a thoughtful person might ask during such a season – namely:

  1. What are you thankful for?
  2. And who are you thankful to?
  3. And how do you manifest that Thanksgiving?

Are you thankful for your life? Who might you thank for such a thing? And how might you manifest that thanksgiving?  Consider the scripture:

See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever. If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me. I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy. Rejoice, o ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.”

The Lord God is a creating God – the only creating God. He made you. You should be thankful to Him for every breath you take. If He were done with you, or me, or anyone, we wouldn’t be able, by any will, to draw even one more breath. Consider that as you languish in feast-induced drowsiness on Thursday. And how might you manifest that thanksgiving, should you have it? By forging a battle plan to conquer Black Friday? By the obligatory guilt-stuffing of the dollar or two into the Salvation Army bucket induced by the Santa-hatted bell ringer? You bring the notion of Thanksgiving up to the level of a recognized holiday, and yet most people are not truly thankful to God for anything and certainly have no sober, meaningful way of manifesting any sincere thanksgiving.

It is impossible to give thanks to a god who you vainly believe loves everybody. That god doesn’t exist. It’s an opiate that you’ve been fed since birth. The God who made you loves a humble heart, and humility is diametrically opposed to rebellion. So when you rebel against God in all the manifest ways that you do – by giving the nod to divorce and remarriage to satisfy your lusts, supporting same sex marriage, sanctioning fornication amongst your children, failing to raise them in a proper nurture and admonition of the Lord – there is no way that you can be giving thanks to Him. Definitions get in the way. Words are stubborn things.

It is impossible to give thanks to a god who you believe gives you a ‘free will.’ That god doesn’t exist. The Lord Jesus Christ asked – which one of you, by taking thought, can add a cubit to his stature? Which one of you indeed.

There is a huge difference between giving sincere thanks to the God who made you and just liking your life’s situation. The latter is equivocation of the basest sort. True thanksgiving to God means that you humbly obey Him. True Thanksgiving to God means that you would strive against sin – that you would not suffer it upon your neighbor. True thanksgiving would mean that you do that every day, with your might – with no need for a special day to manifest a counterfeit version.

Indeed, a perverse spirit is upon the men of the world, one so breathtaking and vexing that I marvel that the word thanksgiving doesn’t choke in many of your mouths. But take hope in that we are all worthless, vile worms, none of us having any merit of our own – and those who the Lord has fixed his gaze upon will receive love, mercy and grace at his omnipotent hand – being justified solely by the blood of our sweet Savior. We call those who we live amongst to stop this insane orgy of lies that you call Thanksgiving and repent while you still have breath in you. What you are doing now is quite thankless, and not at all thankful.  Fear God, and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

Amen.
