For Those Who Proclaim An Interest In Being With Us As We Serve The Lord: Get With The Program!

Here at this church, we regularly hear from good people who agree with our preaching – or at least say they do – and continually read our sermons, Tweets and signs and watch our various video productions. In fact, just earlier this week while I was standing in front of a Houston mega-church with fellow WBC picketers, a young man approached me, told me he lived just a couple of miles from there and then explained to me how he daily reads our materials and monitors our website and that he is in full agreement that today’s churches are good for nothing with their “God loves everybody” lie.

We are happy to help the Lord’s people in any and all ways, and we are daily grateful that the Lord – that Great Shepherd of the sheep – leads us in all our paths.

But for those of you who proclaim an interest in being with us as we serve the Lord in these last days, that is to say, to you “wish I was there” people, I tell you directly it’s time to get with the program!

On this point – as in all other power points of life – the Bible is clear and gives you all you need to know.

In the fourth chapter of Matthew, we see Jesus calling to Simon Peter and Andrew, his brother. “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”, cried the Christ.  Their reaction?  They “straightway left their nets, and followed him.”  (If you’re wondering what “straightway” means, it means “at once.”)

And going on from there, Jesus ran across two more brothers – James and John – who were on a ship with their dad working. Jesus called them, and they “immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.”  (Matthew 4:18-22).

Another account tells us James and John were so abrupt in their actions that they literally left “their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants.” It’s as though they left in mid-shift.  (Mark 1:20).

Do you get this picture? If in fact you have a calling to follow the Savior wherever he goes, you get on with it, even when it involves leaving your current job and your family.  There are plenty of jobs in this world.  And the Lord’s people are your family.  So get with the program, my friends!

If there is one thing I have learned from traveling around this country now for a quarter of a century, it’s this:  You are where you are!  The dirt may be a slightly different color, the terrain may be hillier or flatter, the trees and flowers may look a bit different, but you are still on terra firma wherever you are.

In John chapter 1, we read of Jesus finding Philip of Bethsaida, and Philip spread the word to Nathanael. Nathanael didn’t mess around about it; he went with Phillip right away to check it out.  When Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, he said “Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile.”  So we learn right there that the true people of God are sincere, honest and guileless.  That word “guile” is a good word; it means:  “insidious cunning in attaining a goal; crafty or artful deception; duplicity.”  We have had people filled with guile come in our midst.  It doesn’t work — only sincerity and open-faces gets is done.  (John 1:43-51).

So if you are an “Israelite indeed” then again I say: get with the program. Great is the reward.  “[T]hou shalt see greater things than these.  . . .  Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”  (John 1:50, 51).

Amen!
