“And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?” (Matthew 16:3)
These words from Christ — yes, that Christ the Bible-illiterate masses believe only talked about rainbows and unicorns — are in His answer to the religious hypocrites of His day, when they demanded that He identify the sign they can watch for to discern when the end of times would be upon the earth.
Christ has been preparing this earth and her inhabitants for His triumphant return. He articulated clearly how things would be — the signs of the times — so that anyone with eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to understand would be able to see it coming, articulate a clear pronouncement of it coming, prepare the way for that coming, and be looking steadfastly up into the heavens at the hour of that coming, to wit:
“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” [Luke 21:25-28]
So our duty, in performance of that work we are energized by Christ to do, referenced in this verse:
“Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.” (Isaiah 62.11)
I say, in performance of that work we must consider the signs of the times and talk about it. The news cycles in this nation and this world are filled with two primary subject matters: Horrors and whoredoms. Literally, you can easily break down each news day into these two groups. If you’re not feverishly manufacturing new words to describe the severity of some new horror that has befallen some significant group of humans in the earth … you are feverishly pushing some filthy agenda of either sins of the flesh (like same sex marriage or transgender folly) or spiritual whoredoms as you pile idolatry onto idolatry.
On nearly every continent you have “wars or rumours of wars” [Matthew 24:6] Iraq, where this brutish nation pretended they could go and make a difference in that millennia’s-long conflict, has collapsed into bloody, murderous chaos. African nations are perpetually at war within and without their borders. Ukraine, Turkey, Syria, Egypt, Thailand, Pakistan.
If it’s not wars — or an endless stream of senseless homicides — it’s upheavals in the natural world: Tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes, heat waves, droughts, wildfires, mudslides, avalanches, rockslides, floods … and I’ve probably left plenty more categories out. Isaiah promised in his prophecies a simple view of these things:
“And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.” [Isaiah 2:19]
The other thing the media spends it’s time on is telling of the most perverse stories of whoredoms. By recent example, a teen whose parents utterly failed to instruct him on God’s precious Word — shows up to get his license, painted up and coifed like a young girl. Understandably concerned that the license photo will be inconsistent with the demographics, the poor dummies at the DMV dare to require the boy not look like a girl! NOT IN THIS COUNTRY! says the freak-brigade. We’re going to make a public spectacle and demand that perverts get to flaunt their perversion … and the media loves to promote it.
And all I can say about the folly going on is Brazil is … can anybody spell I-D-O-L? That silly sport (in and of itself a harmless exercise) has turned into a religion, and the people bow down to worship it, even while the citizens of the nation it’s being played in live in squalor and misery a few blocks away! There is the love of this generation in proper focus — bloomin’ hypocrites!
So what does the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ say to such things?
We say Hallelujah! We say Praise God! We say, while the world of wicked and mighty sinners before the Lord pretend that they do not believe in God … that God does not exist … that the Bible is a fiction, prophecy after prophecy is fulfilled. This world is decreating. This world is the very picture of Christ’s description of how things will be in the last days.
We at WBC are blessed by our Creator with the ability to discern the signs of the times. While the remainder of the world’s population will be overtaken by Christ’s return … as one who is come upon by a thief in the night, it is not so with us.
“For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. ¶ Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” [1 Thessalonians 5:3-6]
