This current generation has agreed upon a fable – a fairy tale religion, perpetrated by their father the Devil, which holds many false doctrines, often deceptively put forth as Christian truths. Chief among these Satanic doctrines is “Human Unity”, and “Tolerance”. This false doctrine abuses and twists scriptural concepts of love and mercy, and turns them into a license for unbridled sin. Bowing to this false doctrine has turned virtually all of the so called Christians in this world into sniveling apologists for God, who are afraid to preach against sin. There will only ever be unity in the body of Christ – which body the people of this generation demand be polluted with the malignant cancer of impenitent, graceless sinners. There is a particular strain of this false doctrine, which the enemies of Christ hurl at this little church on a daily basis, regarding some of our children who have come to years, and declared proudly that they desire to spend their vapor of a life enjoying the pleasures of sin for a season, rather than suffering affliction and reproach with the people of God. We are ridiculed and vilified for doing our scriptural duty, which is to withdraw from, keep no company with, and avoid such heretics, that we be not hypocritical, vain professors, that we be not a partaker in their sins, and that they be ashamed and brought to repentance, if the Lord will be merciful to them. “But they’re such good people! They’re so kind! They’re so smart! They’re your children! Don’t you have a heart! Jesus is all about love! We just have to love one another and have compassion and empathy – big truckloads of compassion and empathy and love! Did I mention empathy and compassion?” Listen up! What fellowship hath light with darkness?!? What concord has Christ with Belial?!? I don’t need to know anything else about a person, if I know that they proudly reject the plain teachings of the scriptures. There is no conversation to have beyond that! It’s a show stopper! Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play? There are many scriptures that speak to this issue, but let’s focus in on some of the words directly from the mouth of Jesus Christ on the topic.
Matthew 10: “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. … the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. … And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. … Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”
This is Jesus Christ himself promising that there will not be human unity – he came with the sword of his mouth to destroy human unity, and set men at variance – that is to sever, or to cleave in half. He gives a stark warning that we had better not turn from Christ in order to maintain a familial relationship – he tells us that those family members that will not serve God are in fact our foes, and that we ought to expect such things to happen.
Matthew 12: 46-50 “While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
Again, the Lord Jesus gives crystal clear instruction as to who our family is – don’t talk to me about blood relations – talk to me about those who serve the King of the place! There is my family!
Luke 18:28-30 “Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee. And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake, Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.”
Again, Jesus tells us to expect that we will lose human relationships over the quarrel of the covenant, up to and including parents, children, and spouses, and indeed promises us blessing in this life, and that our eternal reward is sure, and is well worth the cost. We are thankful to pay it! We count him faithful who has promised.
By the grace of God, we teach our children from the cradle what is required of them by their creator. We bind the words of God upon them, and put them as frontlets before their eyes. Instructing them line upon line, precept upon precept. Here a little, there a little. They come to years, and according to the good pleasure of their Creator, they either cling to those words of life, or they forsake them. Praise God for either result!
To those who have walked away from the fountains of living water, and hewed out for themselves broken cisterns which can hold no water – you, above all men, are without excuse. We warn you with sincere love – Repent or Perish. Beyond these words of life, we have nothing else for you, and we make no apologies – your determination to split hell wide open will not sway us. We don’t care how cute you were as a baby, or how many fleshly memories we share. Will that maudlin sentimentality bring a drop of water to your tongue in hell? Will it dampen the flames for even a brief moment?
To those children who have come to years and forsaken the world, and have cleaved to the Lord, despite all of Satan’s efforts to sway you – I believe I speak for all of the parents at this little church when I say that we count you among our highest blessings in this earth, and are thankful and humbled to make this pilgrimage with you.
Whatever the case, and whatever circumstance the Lord sees fit to put before us, we join with Joshua in saying:
Joshua 24:15 “ … choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
